The water abundance of Idjwi Island forms the basis for energy generation in the small hydroelectric power plant, which powers the industrial campus on the island. The same water from the streams and rivulets has been used by SCPNCK members at the Ngula Washing station to produce a washed coffee lot. The process applied is similar to the Kenya Double Washed Process. Extended fermentation underwater followed by washing of the parchment ensures a cup as clear as a mountain stream, with juicy notes and a creamy mouthfeel. We honor the streams on Idjwi with this coffee lot and therefore call it “Kabogo,” which in the Kihavu language means “stream.”
