The word “Enjaja” from the Kihavu language means “young,” but in everyday usage, it’s often applied to honor someone specific. By saying “Enjaja…,” one expresses the wish for that person to live long. Among the heavy conflicts of the region, women often suffer disproportionately. At the retreat of Île Idjwi, the Island of Peace, some women have now come together at the Ngula Washing Station to produce a very special lot. They harvested the cherries and cleaned and fermented the coffee at the microstation. They turned the drying coffee cherries on the African beds for optimal drying, continuously selecting throughout.
