On April 29 and 30, the first Canephorum will take place at our roastery Hoppenworth und Ploch in Länderweg – a two-day workshop event around the topic of Canephora. Together with you, some proven experts want to explore the possibilities that this species offers – because a lot of potential is hidden there! Together with the importers cumpa, Latitud0, Indie Roasters and Neumann Kaffee Gruppes as well as the roasters Suedhang and Giovanna Kaffee and Indie Coffee Roasters, we have organized an event for you that revolves entirely around Canephora.

Fruity canephora? Never – right!?

After Arabica, Canephora is the second most cultivated species of the Coffea family in the world – the best known variety of Canephora is Robusta. You may know it as the little stepchild of the coffee lover, but this reputation is completely unjustified. At the Canephorum we want to show why: the sensory capabilities of Robustas are far from being explored and the participating importers will have some coffees in store that can surprise you sensorially! They will show how Canephora is increasingly gaining ground in the niche of specialty coffees, what new approaches producers are taking, and what positive impact the production of “Fine Robusta” can have on people and the climate. In compact lectures and cuppings you will get to know the different Canephora worlds of Ecuador, Uganda, Vietnam and India.

But what do I do with it?

If you really want to tease out the potential of Canephora and Fine Robusta, you’ll have to adapt: you’ll have to plan differently, roast differently, distribute differently, and adjust your standard preparation recipes a bit as well. You can learn from the best – On Saturday, experienced Fine Robusta professionals will discuss Fine Robusta recipe development with each other and with the audience. Then on Sunday, Mik, Head of Coffee at Suedhang and author of a manual on Fine Canephora, will take a closer look at roasting Canephora in his workshop. What concepts do I use when roasting Fine Robusta? What is different here than with Arabica? In cupping, he will show different roasting defects in Fine Robusta and explain to us how they come about or can also be prevented. Finally, on Sunday, Gio and Anna, operators of the roastery Giovanna Coffee, will give a talk on the specifics of marketing Fine Robusta and Canephora respectively. The whole festival will be moderated by Anna. As co-owner of Giovanna Kaffee (Canephora!), finalist at the German Barista Championships 2022 (Canephora!) and podcast master (kaffeesahnepodcast), her professional life revolves around the coffee community and Canephora.

29th und 30th of April at Hoppenworth & Ploch in Frankfurt am Main

Ha, glad you asked! Of course, fun and physical well-being are also provided for. The highlight right up front: you can put the knowledge you’ve gained to the test right away on Saturday in a competition! Who pulls the best espresso? Who makes the tastiest Oatly drink? All participants will also benefit from a discounted price of only 39,- for the whole event – if you are interested, please contact Giovanna, she will coordinate your participation in the competition! But be quick, the competition is limited to a maximum of 16 participants in a maximum of 8 teams!

To make sure you’re well taken care of, we’ll provide a vegan pizza buffet on Saturday evening, which is also a great way to have a relaxed get-together. And to get Sunday off to a good start, we’ll start with a vegan brunch before getting back into the swing of things. Both are included in the ticket price!

Yes well, but why all that?

Canephora is hopelessly underrated as a species next to Arabica, and we want to show what can be done with Canephora to get it the attention it deserves. Climate change is forcing us to explore new avenues in the short and long term – and Canephora is one of them. Already, species are being crossed to produce more resilient varieties. And Canephora is not only coming to the fore in our country – there are more and more farmers dedicated to the perfection of their Canephora, and it is about time that the excellent work of these farmers is made available to a wider public.

Ok, where can I sign?

Your interest is piqued? Great! Then book your ticket here! If you are quick enough, you might even be able to get one of the 15 Early Bird Tickets, which are only 59,- instead of 79,-! We are looking forward to your coming!
