The water abundance of Idjwi Island forms the basis for energy generation in the small hydroelectric power plant, which powers the industrial campus on the island. The same water from the streams and rivulets has been used by SCPNCK members at the Ngula Washing station to produce a washed coffee lot. The process applied is similar to the Kenya Double Washed Process. Extended fermentation underwater followed by washing of the parchment ensures a distinct cup with juicy fruit notes and a creamy mouthfeel.
Akenji is a second-grade coffee that, while not perfectly sorted, creates important jobs locally. The island of Idjwi and its coffee offer people in the region a genuine opportunity to live and work in peace. We are proud to feature this coffee in our range.
