Uncommon Coffee Blend: The Foreign Root

The Connection
130 years, a small country, and its profound impact on coffee.
Anaerobic Washed Petit Kwilu Canephora from the Mayombe, D.R. Congo, the birthplace of modern Conilon, meets Honey Pacas Arabica from Usulután, El Salvador.
At first, these coffees seem distant.
But they are connected by Belgium, migration, botany, colonial history and family heritage.
The Story
This coffee traces a journey back to the late 19th century. Around this time, the Belgian great-grandfather Jules Denys of our partner Ernesto Samayoa migrated to El Salvador, where he settled and began cultivating Arabica coffee with passion.
His story eventually inspired the company name Café L’Étranger, which can be understood as “the foreigner” or “the stranger”, reflecting the story of someone who arrived from elsewhere.
At the very same historical moment, Belgian botanists were exploring the remarkable Coffea diversity of the Congolese Basin during the height of European colonial expansion following the abolition of slavery.
Amid this violent and exploitative era, discoveries of Canephora populations would later help protect global coffee cultivation from the devastating threat of coffee leaf rust, ultimately shaping the modern Arabica-Canephora duality that defines coffee today.
This coffee connects migration, botany, colonial history, Arabica, Canephora and family heritage in a single narrative around Belgium’s lasting impact on coffee.
The Cup
- The #00148 Colibrí Arabica from El Salvador brings sweetness, brightness and elegance, with notes of red apple, lime, nectarine, hibiscus and dark chocolate. It gives the blend a delicate fruit expression and a refined aromatic profile.
- The #00202 Cayombe Lukula Petit Kwilu from D.R. Congo brings depth, body and intensity, with notes of cocoa, black tea, dark chocolate, dried fruit and liquorice. It adds the Congolese Canephora character and a darker, more structured layer.
Together, they create two possible expressions:
Option 1
- Ratio suggestion: 4g Colibrí + 8g Cayombe Lukula
- Approx. order structure: 1 bag Colibrí + 1 bag Cayombe Lukula
- Tested as: Espresso
In espresso, the blend is bold and structured, with dark chocolate, roasted hazelnut, black cherry, thick body and crema, plus hints of stone fruit.
Option 2
- Ratio suggestion: 8g Colibrí + 4g Cayombe Lukula
- Approx. order structure: 4 bags Colibrí + 1 bag Cayombe Lukula
- Tested as: Omniroast
With more Colibrí in the blend, the more delicate notes come through, bringing a brighter and more elegant expression both suited for Espresso or other preparation methods.
